Joe will be teaching a Sports Action Photo Workshop at THE NEW GLEASON’S GYM in DUMBO Brooklyn. In addition to learning how to photograph sports, action, graphics, as well as portraits of the boxers, there will be plenty of time to walk around the neighborhood. We will visit the Brooklyn Pier and spend time photographing the skyline and whatever else catches our eye in the park or along the way.
Located in the heart of Brooklyn, Gleason’s Gym is one of the oldest boxing gyms in the United States. For nearly a hundred years, everything in boxing either begins or ends at Gleason’s and in one way or another, every major, noteworthy fighter has found his way to Gleason’s – La Motta, Liston, Ali, Forman, Holmes, Leonard, Spinks, and Tyson to name only a few. Now in its FOURTH incarnation, this fight gym has become the premier training ground in the U.S. for boxers with big dreams. This gym has another kind of magic as well. Gleason’s gym is probably one of the few places, in the world, where you can have a district attorney sparring with a former champion of the world, trained by a convicted felon. Walk towards the office and you will see a true American entrepreneur, Bruce Silverglade—owner of Gleason’s, not only orchestrating the gym, but directing the careers of some stars of tomorrow. Look to your left and you will see a young Israeli from Jerusalem skipping rope with a Palestinian from Gaza. Look to your right and you will see two women, one black and one white, training for the Golden Gloves. The magic lies in the fact that, here in this gym, there is none of the religious, ethnic, or cultural warfare that rages everywhere outside it’s walls. Here everyone is a respected equally and the only battles are fought in the ring.
Joe will instruct you on how to improve your skills with sports and action photography and come away with better photographs. Gleason’s Gym is loaded with interesting graphics. This is also another place to hone your skills in portraiture as well. Afterwards we will walk around DUMBO visit the pier and make some skyline photographs of New York as well.
