Join Joe DiMaggio, well-known photographer and filmmaker for a special exciting Photo Walk during one of New York City’s liveliest and most colorful celebrations, Chinatown’s celebration of the Chinese New Year. The Chinese New Year attracts crowds of people each year and is celebrated over a two-week period in New York’s Chinatown. This year’s celebration will explode in an array of vibrant colors and provide a one-of-a-kind cultural experience.
Chinatown is located in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Manhattan. Each section of Chinatown offers a different experience, and when the streets erupt into celebration, the result in unreal.
This will be a day of excitement and exploration as you learn the art of street photography and action photography. You will be given the opportunity to capture the spirit of this event as you photograph parades and traditional ceremonies (including the firecracker celebration meant to ward off evil spirits) as you walk the colorful and bustling streets of Chinatown. Throughout Chinatown during the New Year festival, you will find lions and dragon dance troupes marching through its main streets.
On this photo walk you will gain invaluable advice as Joe shares his professional insights and specific tips to help you create more meaningful photographs, rather than just merely recording a place or scene.
For Joe, each and every Workshop takes on a life of its own the key for the year of the Goat is flexibility and spontaneity. Chinatown is one of the oldest and most lively sections of NYC. During the New Year’s celebration, Chinatown takes on an unbelievable persona and You want to be part of the celebration.
Equipment: You want to go as light as possible—really! Bring one camera and one wide-angle zoom and one mid-range zoom (i.e., 10-22mm, 16-35mm, 24-70mm or 70-200mm) lenses. Bring plenty of memory cards and/or film, extra batteries, a cleaning cloth, some filters (polarizing if it’s a sunny day), plastic bags for your gear if it’s inclement weather, and an on-camera flash or strobe unit. Please: NO tripods, NO rolling cases, and NO large backpacks.
Clothing: Dress casually and comfortably in layers, with good walking shoes. We will mainly be outdoors so bring appropriate clothing for the winter weather, hats, scarves, and especially gloves to protect your hands (cameras get cold!) and possibly hand warmers stashed in your pockets if that works for you.

Workshops in the Continental U.S.
We rely on your attendance and make important arrangements prior to workshops because there is a lot of pre-production involved. If, for any reason, you need to withdraw, please notify us in writing (e mail is okay) 30 days prior to the start of the workshop and we will refund the workshop less $125 for the cancellation fee. If you need to cancel after 30 days prior to the workshop we retain the entire balance.
We are not responsible for cancellations due to medical emergencies.
